William W. (Wes) Turton, MD, FACS, FASMBS

A native of Cordele, Georgia, Dr. Turton earned his medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta. He completed his internship, followed by his surgical residency, at the Medical College of Georgia Hospital and Clinics. Prior to this, he graduated summa cum laude from Georgia Southwestern College in Americus and received his Associate of Arts degree from Oxford College of Emory University.
Dr. Turton is board certified by the American Board of Surgery and a fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS). He is a member of the Southeastern Surgical Congress, the American Society of General Surgeons and the Georgia Surgical Society. Dr. Turton is also a fellow of the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgeons (FAMBS).
He served as president of the Moretz Surgical Society from 2004 to 2005. This group, affiliated with the Medical College of Georgia, is comprised of more than 300 surgeons nationwide who are dedicated to the exchange of scientific research and observation.
Dr. Turton is affiliated with West Georgia Physicians and is in practice at West Georgia Surgery and Bariatrics with offices in LaGrange and Columbus, Georgia, and Opelika, Alabama. He has been a member of the medical staff at WellStar West Georgia Medical Center since 2007 and served as president of the medical staff in 2011. Prior to that, he served on the medical staff of Oconee Medical Hospital in Seneca, South Carolina, for 12 years. Dr. Turton was one of the first surgeons in South Carolina to perform advanced laparoscopic surgery. He was also one of the first surgeons in Georgia to perform Single Incision Laparoscopic (SILS) gallbladder surgery.
Dr. Turton founded the Bariatric Surgery Program at WellStar West Georgia Medical Center and has performed over 1,200 Laparoscopic Bariatric surgeries. He led the WellStar WGMC’s weight loss surgery program to become designated as as an Accredited Center® by the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program [formerly known as an American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence®].
In addition, WellStar WGMC’s Bariatric Surgery program has been recognized by other health care entities as well under Dr. Turton’s leadership as medical director. CareChex®, an independent healthcare research company, ranked the Bariatric Surgery program as No. 3 in Medical Excellence out of 39 Georgia hospitals and No. 90 among 1,414 U.S. hospitals for 2016. It also has been named a Blue Distinction for Bariatric Surgery program by Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association as well as an Optum Center of Excellence
He has extensive training in the latest surgical techniques, including laparoscopic surgical techniques. He performs most abdominal procedures laparoscopically; these minimally invasive techniques require fewer and smaller incisions, which helps patients recover faster, experience less pain, and return more quickly to normal activities.
